Self-compassion: a key to regulating inflammation

Uncategorized May 23, 2020

The majority of health problems can be summed up, at some point, by excess inflammation in the body. This inflammation may be local in the case of acute injury, or may be systemic in chronic illness. The question arises: how can we manage and modulate this inflammation? Several methods exist; I present to you self-compassion!

Consider the following idea: By loving yourself, you will decrease the presence of inflammation in your body. Research carried out asked subjects to complete various questionnaires on their self-esteem, their level of self-compassion and various other factors. Blood samples were taken to analyze a marker, IL-6, which is used to find out the level of inflammation. During the experiment, the subjects suffered a standardized source of stress. Post-stress blood tests revealed that the group with the highest self-compassion score had less elevation of the inflammatory marker. The more you love yourself, the less you will be inflammed!

The question that was not answered in the study is: How can I increase my self-compassion? So I share with you a simple Ayurvedic technique (traditional Hindu medicine): Each morning, rub your whole body with your hands, repeating out loud "I love myself".

Love yourself !
